Improvement Canvas (Free to Download)

A key principle underpinning our sustainability value is that of sharing our IP as much as possible, in order to make as many companies as healthy as possible. One of the first practices being opened up for public use is our Improvement Canvas.


An Improvement Canvas is an approach for dealing with an individual’s personal and professional development. The latest CIPD research describes how there is a need for performance management to be divided into developmental (personal improvement) and administrative (e.g. salary decisions). Our Improvement Canvas is a step on that journey for forward-thinking organisations.


It is critical for managers to refocus their attention when it comes to performance management. Managers tend to have control of the organisational “system” (structures, processes etc.), and it is the system itself that controls an individual’s performance. Managers then proceed to judge individuals on how well they navigate that system. Most performance management systems within organisations are a Machiavellian work of art.
